Sturdy little tree, great company

I received the tree about two months ago. Out of the box there were a couple of leaves that didn’t survive the packing. In my original review I mentioned this problem and immediately received a message from John Dhanens, the owner and nursery manager of Clifton Farms offering his help to make sure that the tree pulls through and recovers from the trip. After a few weeks of settling in the tree is doing much better now and John sent along another message just to check on the tree and to make sure I was happy with the purchase.
I have to say, in this day, this type of customer service and follow up is very rare indeed. I will be sure to tell everyone I know about John and his desire to make things right. In his own words; “Being a little guy, my philosophy is to be in it for the long haul, building long term relationships with customers… Glad to hear the tree is doing better…” Clifton Nursery and John has a new supporter in me. I am very pleased with the whole purchase and follow through.

Meyer Lemons in Season, in NY, in October!

Just harvested my first Meyer lemons, in NY, in October! This little tree is a family favorite! It lost all but three leaves last winter (it was a cold one, even indoors), and the branch on which the lemons were ripening was broken by the cat and repaired with electrical tape, then splinted with a sturdy paint-stirrer. In spite of all that, it grew new branches, flourished again, yesterday, after almost 14 months of ripening (!), even on a healed branch, I harvested three gorgeous thin-skinned, fragrant, juicy lemons, which I promptly made into tarts and curd. Well worth the wait. I am SO pleased!

Awesome tree with very fragrant flowers!

The lemon tree I received was taller than I expected, but it arrived with very fragrant flowers and was generally in descent shape. It probably isn’t suitable for a bonsai-type of decorative indoor plant due to its height (~3 ft tall with a lengthy trunk), but it is still suitable for indoor or apartment use. I’ve had it for several weeks now and it has really rebounded from its initial condition and has produced a lot of new fragrant flowers. I’m serious–a lot of flowers! In general, this tree has become an awesome talking point and my friends really love it. I recently saw a Meyer lemon tree at a local plant nursery that looked smaller and was more like a bonzai tree, but it cost a lot more. I would definitely recommend purchasing this tree for yourself or as a gift.

Easy Greens!

I ordered these seeds from Amazon and they arrived lightning fast. Within days of spread some of the seeds into a couple of 3 gallon pots the seedlings began to appear. Mesclun is great for containers and this is a nice mix. I’m looking forward to my first home grown Mesclun salad!

A GOOD TOOL IS A WONDERFUL THING

I have had many rakes of differing type.

I greatly enjoy my Fiskars scissors & various tools, so I bought one of these and the narrower one of similar design.

It is a JOY to hold with the sort of oblong section to the light, well balanced long handle. I’m amazed at how well the curved plastic ‘fingers’ work in getting at the LEAVES and not the dirt.

And the PRICE is incredible for what usefulness it offers!

BEST LEAF RAKE EVER?

COULD THIS BE THE BEST LEAF RAKE EVER?

Bought mine at LOWES a couple of years ago to replace another plastic-tined rake which I had been very pleased with. Was astounded at the comfort and effectiveness of the Fiskars rake vs. my old rake whose tines had been worn off. Loaned it to a neighbor – a recent college grad from one of the area’s big engineering schools – very shortly later he had his own Fiskars!

Living in a veritable Druid’s grove of various Quercus species, some of them with thin LIVE OAK type leaves, I have found this rake to be capable of gathering most of those with one pass.

Fiskars promotes this rake with the slogan:

Believe it. [and thanks Fiskars engineers for a super product!]

TECHNICAL HI-LITES

1. TINES: are VERY sturdy and durable but you will need your garden rake to move big and/or damp piles of leaves

2. HANDLE: long enough for taller people but fine for shorter ones. The egg-shaped cross section allows much weight reduction yet provides great strength and it provides a level of comfort and fatigue-resistance that has to be experienced to be believed.

quality control

The 101 is a great timer. I like the fact that it’s powered by the flow. It does have some problems though.

This timer(flowmeter) is cheap. Too cheap. I’ve purchased more than 30 and watched them age and product evolve over the last 10 years. 10 years ago they worked flawlessly in the original models. No leaks and no failures. Five years ago Melnor went to a design that incorporated plastic parts, but I don’t think there was problem in that development, but coincident with that and other modifications, was chronic leaking.

The problem lies primarily in the way the current design threaded female receptor connects to the frame. They use a small screw to secure the female threaded adapter to the body. It leaks, at least on those mfg’ed in the last 3 years.

Another leak point occurs under the dial. There shouldn’t be a problem here because the dial is actually independent of the spring loaded shut-off valve. The dial gear train merely releases the spring. Previously, these problems didn’t occur. I wish I had bought a batch of the old units.

Both of these complaints point to quality control. In a given mfging run several units may have problems. The probability of getting a problem unit has risen from 5% five years ago to an amazing 30% now. If you doubt, ask Yardbirds, that is, if they would bother to collect such records.

I keep buying them in hopes I will get a few good ones. I’d be willing to pay twice as much for out of the box leak free reliability, at least the reliability they used to have. Quality has fallen partially because the company believes they can’t sell a non-electric unit at a price that could support the quality.

I don’t know what others are doing with the 101, but these reports about getting 2 – 3 years out of them don’t square with my experience. They last indefinitely even while exposed to the elements. I’ve yet to have one fail as long as it wasn’t a failure out of the box.

Another thing: the sun’s UV erases everything printed on the dial, so you have to emboss your own set points. No biggee, but the company incurs superfluous cost in providing all this gallonage and hours, which is also rendered superfluous by variations in flow velocity and imprecision in quantities desired. The company should leave it to the user to determine how far to rotate the dial for some preferred quantity of water.

Last thing: Don’t rotate the dial beyond 210 degrees. The unit will act as though it’s locked ON.

Good for the money

I have owned a dozen plus of these timers. I have 0.6 acres. 140 Psi water pressure. Temps range form light frost to 100F in inland southern CA. I use them mostly connected to hoses I drag around to water trees and shrubs (50 plus).

Pros: Delivers the same amount of water at a trickle or at full blast. This is a plus if your water pressure varies due to what you have on. I’ll run 5 or 6 going at a time and the water pressure to each can really vary especially when they shut off at different times. All mechanical so no batteries to every change. Really simple to operate: just turn the dial the the amount of water you want delived and go. Too many of the battery operated items have lost power and I have no idea how to reset them unless I’ve stored the manual or google (I do run some battery operated units for drip…). Most of mine have lasted 5 plus years. I have some close to 10 years. They stand the high pressure well. Although I don’t do it on purpose, I semi-regularly forget and leave one or two on with full water pressure applied for a couple of weeks while in the full sun: I’ve yet to have one break. I am more dilligent when on vacations…

Cons: With my high water pressure most units (not all) have a little spray where they connect to the faucet when the valve shuts off. Over a year or two in full sun the numbers begin to wear off (the unit still works easliy as you can feel where the valve shuts on and off when you rotate the dial but you’re approximating the setting). The printing for ones I’ve had for 7 plus years in the shade is fine. I’ve had a couple of the connections at the faucet split, but I think this is mostly because I was over tightening the plastic connector trying to get the ones that leaked during shut off to stop. I was over tightening hard. (remember I have 140 psi pressure). Note: tightening does nothing, the light spray is a quality or design issue and my high water pressure so tighten snug and you got what you got.

Summary: These are good units that would be great if they improved the faucet connection for leaks. I haven’t found a better mechanical water meter.

BTW: I did have one become hard to rotate after about 6 years. Found I was leaving it in the water position when not in use and the platic stem inside to shut off the valve was bending. Thus if you shut off the water at the faucet you may want to turn the dial to off to take the load off the valve stem.

Great product if it doesn’t leak

I’ve used these for years to water my lawn using a moving ‘tractor’ sprinkler. I lay out the hose and set the timer (flow meter) having learned how far it will travel with a given setting. I’ve had two for about 10 years with no problems. One was damaged by freezing and the other one broken by tripping on the hose in the dark.

I couldn’t find them locally so I went online. Ordered three. All 3 leaked where the faucet mounting part enters the body of the timer. When the water is on, the leak is moderate. When the timer turns off, the leak is dramatic and defeats a main purpose of the device – saving water.

I contacted Melnor and they sent me three more. Really good customer service. Unfortunately, they also leak. Not as bad but not acceptable. I know my old ones were made in the USA. These 6 (all leak) were made in China.

No longer skeptical

I was somewhat skeptical whether the inground fence would work for my dog. She is a 5-year old Shichon that loves to chase squirrels, rabbits and cats. We decided to give it a try and installed the system about a month ago. During the initial training I had the collar set to “2″ on the 1 to 5 scale and it didn’t do much. Then I set it to “3″ and allowed her to venture past the white flags. She gave a small yelp and immediately came back in the yard and headed for the house. It took a few days for her to be comfortable in the yard again. But now, a month later, she loves going out and we don’t have to worry about her running off. When she sees rabbits or squirrels she keeps a very close eye on them and may chase a little, but once she gets close to the boundary she stops.

I’ve heard many comments about the RFA-188 battery in the collar not lasting very long so I ordered a couple spares, but I’m still on the original battery and it seems to be holding up great. We take the collar off whenever she’s in the house. When she’s in the yard the collar takes very little energy since she usually doesn’t get close enough to the boundary for the tone to sound. One comment I do have regarding the collar is that it is not very compliant on either side of the control module so it doesn’t fit all that well on my dog’s small neck (approximately 12″ circumference). The module doesn’t hang at the bottom of her neck the way you think it would. It seems to work its way up around to the side of her neck. The good news is, it seems to work just as well no matter where it ends up.

Installation was straight forward, although you should allow a full weekend to get it done. The control box allows the boundary zone to be easily adjusted. I have just a little over 500 feet of wire and a setting of a little over 6 gives a boundary width of about three feet.

It is so nice to see our dog running loose in the yard instead of constantly getting her rope all tangled. She really enjoys her freedom. I highly recommend this product.

Update: We’ve had the fence for 14 months now and are still on the original battery! Can’t say enough good things about the quality of the system and how well it works for our pet.

Fantastic!

We have 2 beagles whose noses would lead them anywhere. They dag under the chain link fence before, run at the slightest sound to see what it is, so I was leery about this product where there was no “visible” fence to keep them confined safely. However, it works like magic! Once trained (which did not take long at all – they figured out that they cannot go past the flags really fast after getting corrected a couple of times), they stay perfectly confined in the little dog area. We were very comfortable taking off the chain link fence and knowing that the dogs would stay put. Even when we are walking around past the perimeter and they want to be with us, they stay behind the flags. When they run after noises, they stay behind the flags.

The only drawback was that the battery for one of the collars was already dead when we got it. Luckily, we received two extra batteries so that was not so much of a problem.

One nice feature is that the collar correction level is adjustable. The beagles didn’t even notice the 2 setting but when we put it up to 3, it worked great.

Installation was a breeze. If you read and understand the directions, you will have no problems at all. Twisting the wire is tricky so it may not hurt to purchase a roll of already twisted wire.

Training the dogs ~ well that depends on the dog. From the reviews I read, some dogs figure it out real quick (and minimal training is required). Our dogs were like that. Some dogs may take a little longer to adjust. In any case, it isn’t a problem with the system (the system is great) and some extra attention may need to be given to more stubborn dogs.

In sum, this system works and is well worth the investment!

Very Good Value for the effort of instalation

We purchased this product after receiving quotes for invisibile fences costing $1,300. The instalation is easy and anyone can do it. All you need is typical side walk edger to cut a slit in the ground to stick the wire in. We installed the main unit in the garage and drilled a hole thru the wall for the wires. I purcased conduit separately to protect the wire until it reached the ground. You should also consider purchasing asphault filler to cover the wire along the gap between the driveway and sidewalk. Overall the installtion took me 5 hours by myself with the majority of the time dedicated to putting the wire in the ground. This was easy but time consuming. Training our dog was also very easy and we could let him loose in the yard after only three training sesions. After we installed our fence, many of our neighbors also were convinced that they could do it as well. By doing this yourself, you can realize savings of $200/hr compared to paying someone else to do it for you. We are very satisfied and would recommed this product to everyone with a small dog. One of our neighbors went for the professional installation and had it installed three weeks before we did. Our dog was trained well before their’s as their company had to come out each time to adjust the settings on the collar as they we not able to control it themselves. If you have any ablity with tools, you can do this yourself.

I’m so glad I can purchase these small clusters through Amazon.com. They’re hard to find in this size. My bird uses these to sleep and rest on (kind of like a nest). He doesn’t have to just stand on a wooden pole. He gets all comfortable on his puff ball. I do have to keep it clean every day. They are great!

Good for teeth AND stress

CET Chews Petite for Small Dogs (30 chews)
My dog loves all sizes of these CET Chews. She is a 15 pound Bichon Frise who loves to chew to relieve stress, but only bones, rawhide, or similar chewables. I’ve heard mixed reviews on rawhide in general, but in the last few years rawhide chews started giving her terribly smelly gas, enough to clear the room! We have discovered, however, that the CET chews do not have that effect, and they help to relieve her stress as well as clean her teeth. We recently switched to the smaller chews because even though she manages the larger chews just fine, we decided it was better to give her smaller ones more often than a big one just occasionally, and that it’s probably easier on her small digestive system. Anyway, we love these and would recommend anyone whose dog enjoys chewing to give these a try. Do keep in mind that whenever your pet is chewing something like this that they should be monitored, though we have never had a minute’s trouble with these. Thanks!

A recent annual checkup for Bo by our veterinarian revealed his molars are now completely free of plaque and the plaque on his canines has been materially reduced. The use of these chews has averted our having to put him to sleep to have his teeth cleaned by the vet, which would have been hard on him and hard on our pocketbook. These chews really work as advertised.

My dogs love these!

My dogs love these chews, and I feel like I am doing something to help them with their dental health.

I will say that I no longer buy the petites because they are just too eas to chew up, even for my six pound Chihuahua.

I now buy the bigger ones and cut them in half, and my only issue with the larger sizes is the inconsistency of thickness in the pieces within a bag. Some of them are so thick even my 30 pound dog gives up on them.

Seems to Work, But Kind of Runny

We have a 15lb fluffball that has major hairball issues. Our vet suggested using Science Diet Hairball Control wet food, but with 4 cats in the household it is way to hard to control cat food consumption.

We opted to try this hairball remedy instead. It does significantly reduce kitty’s hairball issues. The only “con” is that the gel is a bit runny, so when you put it on your finger, you’ve got to be quick to get it to the cat (mine will not lick the gel off my finger).

Because the hairball remedy works, I will repurchase when needed. The tube is pretty big, so it should last a very long time.

8 in 1 Kittymalt is the only hairball remedy that my cats love

My two adult cats LOVE 8 in 1 Kittymalt. They lick it off my finger and to them it is just a treat. In fact, the pet stores near me no longer carry 8 in 1 Kittymalt and I found out the hard way that cats will not eat any other hairball remedy willingly. I have been looking for Kittymalt for at least 6 months and was very excited when I found it on Amazon. My cats are happy again and even my kitten licked the Kittymalt off my finger when he saw how much the big kitties love it. It is a big help for the hairballs and sensitive tummy that my long haired cat gets. I did notice that the new tube of Kittymalt now includes a picture of a different cat and has the word Excel at the top of it. I think Exel might be 8 in 1′s parent company now. Either way the cats still love it!

We have used this product for several years as part of the plan that has evolved to deal with our Ragdoll cat’s chronic, serious constipation problem.

We give him about 10cc of this every other day, along with 5mg Cisapride and 3mL Lactulose 10gm every day. A syringe must be used, since there is no way that he will eat any of this on his own (contrary to what the packaging says).

Veterinarians give you a blank stare when you mention Kittymalt, but for sure the Cisapride and Lactulose alone are NOT enough to deal with this problem, even though the vets seem to think that they ought to be.

great dog treat.
This product is soaked in oils, I recommend
drying off before dog eats them.
